Before we get to how to change it, you may be asking yourself, "What is a favicon"? Well, a favicon is the tiny little image that gets displayed in your web browser as a way of branding a site. Depending on the browser you may see this image in a tab or just to the left of the URL address bar. It'll generally look something like this...

Favicons are excellent for helping to contribute to the overall branding of your site. As you can tell though, Favicons are really really small. In fact, they've historically been a scant 16x16 pixels and only recently have some browsers and technologies begun adopting Favicons that are 32x32 pixels.
Installing your own Favicon in Magento is thankfully really easy to do. Once you log in to Magento you're going to go to System > Configuration > Design > HTML Head > Favicon Icon. Just browse to the favicon you want to use on your computer and hit "Save Config"!
