International shipping has always been extremely difficult for online retailers. Aside from finding a shipping partner that can get to where your package needs to go, there are tariffs and duties to consider, import restrictions, and quite a bit of math to determine if you’re charging enough to still clear a profit.
eBay (parent company of Magento) now hopes to ease all those issues with their new eBay Global Shipping Program. Partnering with Pitney Bowes, eBay will help streamline cross-border transactions by having the seller ship a winning auction to a domestic sorting facility that will then forward the product through the appropriate channels. All the estimates of fees and shipping are calculated by eBay, you just have to name a price. This new program will initially only work for US-based buyers and only through the PayPal (also an eBay company) payment method.
For sellers trying to maximize revenue, this is fantastic news! Generally, the fastest way to more dollars has always been more product or more places to sell. It’s always been hard to break in to new distribution channels, but eBay now helps tremendously.
