Magento 1.7.0.1 Released

It’s been a few months since Magento released the 1.7 update to its Community platform so now seems like the perfect time for a little patch work. It’s good to see that Magento is staying on top of bugs and tweaks to the platform and thankfully it looks like there wasn’t that much they had to cover.

The Release Notes for Magento 1.7.0.1 include…

  • Modified backend configuration UI for PayPal
  • Moved PayPal configuration to the Payments Method menu
  • Fixed SOAP v2 API WS-I compatibility issue
  • Addressed order comment history tab problem with information not saving
  • Closed a number of potential security holes
  • Improved functionality around field sets and field configuration

So there isn’t anything you need to run out and get coverage for, but review the changes and upgrade if there’s anything you need.

Google Product Listings, Free No More

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Google has announced it plans to end the practice of free product listings on its shopping site, formally known as Froogle. There was no solid ETA for the change, but insiders speculate the change will come before the 2012 holiday season.

Many people are seeing Google’s actions as a cash grab. While there’s no doubt Google will make more money with this model, there is also a strong possibility the move is motivated by a desire to improve the quality of product listings for consumers and merchants alike.

Under the free product submission system, Google’s results have been “messy” as a plethora of companies flooded Google with unorganized product data. As much as Google dominates search, it trails significantly behind eBay and Amazon when it comes to online product research. Once Google begins charging for listings the hope is that merchants will focus on providing better product data and Google will be able to offer improved results that are more appealing to users.

If you haven’t taken a look at Google’s product search, check it out. You’re going to want to make sure your products show up.
