Will Google Punish SEO-Optimization?

At last week’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX, Google made an unprecedented pre-announcement: Over the next few weeks and months, it will try to make Google search more relevant by limiting SEO over-optimization by “looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect”.

We at Commative are fanatic about SEO since our customers often live or die by being found on Google so this was something we took note of. In typical Google fashion no further details on what will change or when was disclosed, so it leaves lots of room for rumors and guesses. The good news for our Ultimento customers is that if Google is looking to reward sites that offer relevant content and great customer experience, they should see little change – maybe even improvement. We believe our template is not only set up to be found on the web but also to provide the information and products that shoppers want.

As always, we recommend that our customers be careful with key word stuffing or black hat link building (ie don’t pay for links). We believe fresh, updated and relevant content is always going to be favored. And most importantly: Keep an eye on your ranking over the next few weeks to see if the new Google algorithm affects you.

As always, let us know if you have any observations you want to share with the Ultimento network.

UK Has World’s Most Internet Focused Economy

A report released by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) calculated the Internet economies of the G20 to reach $4.2 trillion by 2016. That’s a pretty staggering number when you think about it. By that time nearly 3 BILLION people will be online, almost half the world’s population.

The blistering expansion of the Internet is without precedence. Virtually non-existent as an industry 20 years ago, Internet related commerce now represents 8.3% of the UK economy, more than any other G20 member. In the United States more than $68 billion of GDP is attributable to the Internet industry.

There’s no doubt that the success of ecommerce is one of the largest contributing factors to this rapid growth. Companies like Amazon, eBay, and even little Magento have made it incredibly easy for sellers to reach customers and enable safe, simple transactions.

There’s a lot going on so get your stores and products up now! There are 3 billion people waiting to see what you have to offer.

Too Many Templates and Blocks?

One of the best features of Magento is how it structures templates and blocks so that you can easily control sections of pages dynamically. One of the biggest problems with a nice big Magento-powered site is that you can lose track of all the various templates and blocks and knowing how they are being implemented in any given page. There is a solution; highlighting.

Just as Magento can highlight the translatable elements of your site, you can configure your Magento Admin Panel to highlight every block and file template that is referenced on any given page. This is great for debugging, trying new layout structures, or just trying to remember what you did last week.

To enable this highlighting, log in to your Magento Admin Panel and navigate to System > Configuration > Advanced > Developer > Debug and enable the options “Template Path Hints” and “Add Block Names to Hints”.

(One little secret. If you don’t see these two options check your “Current Configuration Scope” in the upper left. You have to be in a scope other than “Default Config” for these options to appear)

Once you’ve enabled, saved, and flushed your cache go to your frontend site and you’ll see it now outlines all the different sections of your pages with the templates and blocks that are providing content. It can be a bit messy, but this should give you a good idea of what is coming from where and where to go to make changes.
